Audible goes to head to the class after Florida Derby (G1) romp
March 31, 2018
Into Mischief’s brilliant 3-year-old colt is on his way to Churchill Downs for the Kentucky Derby (G1) following a scintillating performance in the $1 million Florida Derby (G1) on the final day of March at Gulfstream Park.
Audible left little doubt as to who is the best colt in the East with Saturday’s come-from behind win. While Promises Fulfilled and Strike Power zipped through a half-mile in :46.37, Audible was eight lengths from the front. Midway on the backstretch, Audible began to gain ground, steadily closing in on the leaders.
In the three-path on the turn, he struck the front just before straightening for home and continued his run in the lane, drawing off to win by three lengths, getting the last quarter-mile in a swift :12 2/5 and the 1 1/8-miles in 1:49.48.
“The race unfolded with the pace that we were hoping for and we wanted to get some position into the first turn, which he was able to do beautifully,” said trainer Todd Pletcher. “You could tell the pace up front had developed pretty swiftly so you felt like those horses were going to start to come back at some stage.”
Audible, who is owned by China Horse Club, Head of Plains Partners, Starlight Racing and WinStar Farm, now sits atop the Road to the Kentucky Derby Challenge Series with 110 points. The big payday upped the colt’s earnings to $882,920. Audible has won four straight, including the Holy Bull S. (G2), since finishing third in his debut.
Into Mischief is second on the 2018 General Sire list with more than $3.5 million in progeny earnings.
