Mi Bago became the newest debut winner for freshman sire Vekoma when the New York-bred colt won a $60,000 Maiden Special Weight race at Colonial Downs on August 1st.

Mi Bago sold as a short yearling at the 2023 Fasig-Tipton February Mixed Sale for $62,000 to current trainer Carlos Munoz and owner CM Thoroughbreds. The colt was bred by Highclere Inc., and is out of the Indian Charlie mare Wabanaki.

Ridden by jockey Gavin Ashton, Mi Bago broke well from the gate, quickly became the pacesetter, dueling until he broke free along the turn and comfortably cruised to a win by 2 1/2 lengths. He ran the five-furlong dirt race in a time of :57.40.

The win marks 12 winners now for Vekoma, whose total progeny earnings moved to $603,654 to date – good for the No. 2 spot so far in the North American First-Crop Sires race behind only Complexity.
