Extra Anejo became the 84th lifetime graded stakes winner for Into Mischief with a stellar effort in Tuesday’s Commonwealth S. (G3) at Keeneland.

The 5-year-old, who was making his first start since last September, was at his best after the near seven-month layoff. He broke very quickly from post 10 in the field of 11, then took back off what developed into a very fast pace. Montalcino flew through fractions of :21.83 and :44.48, with Extra Anejo some eight lengths back when he launched his bid midway on the turn.

He progressed steadily while well off the rail, then had to alter course in mid-stretch to find clear running. He surged past Montalcino and Cigar Mile (G2) winner Hoist the Gold to win by 1 ½-lengths in 1:23.63 for the seven furlongs on a fast track.

“He’s always had a tremendous amount of talent,” Scott Blasi, assistant to trainer Steve Asmussen, said. “You can tell that by the races we’ve run him in. We’ve always believed in him and I’m glad [owner] Mr. [Ron] Winchell kept him in training another year. I still think he has some big things ahead of him.”

Extra Anejo now has five wins and a second in nine starts and has earned $582,545. He was bred in Kentucky by Mt. Brilliant Farm, LLC and Orrin Ingram.

Into Mischief now has seven graded stakes winners in 2025, tops among all North American sires. He has several top contenders for the Kentucky Derby (G1), with Tappan Street, Sovereignty and Citizen Bull all assured starting spots in the May 3rd Run for the Roses.
