Undefeated Sandy Bottom the second stakes winner for Omaha Beach
October 22, 2023
Sandy Bottom, a 2-year-old daughter of Omaha Beach, became his second stakes winner with a one-length victory in Saturday’s $91,000 Anoakia S. at Santa Anita Park.
Omaha Beach now has seven stakes horses and four graded horses, which ties him on the First-Crop list in both categories with fellow Spendthrift freshman sire Vino Rosso.
Sandy Bottom, a front-running debut maiden winner at Del Mar on September 10, used similar tactics in Saturday’s six-furlong race. She sprang quickly out of the gate under Umberto Rispoli and was up a half-length at the first call. She widened that margin at the top of the lane and easily held off Tambo late to finish in 1:10.55 on a fast track.
“Umberto seemed in command up the backside, it was nice to see him put a little daylight in between him and everyone else coming to the quarter pole,” said winning trainer Mike McCarthy. “We will keep her at one turn for now. I believe there is a stake in a few weeks time at Del Mar around one turn that may be something to think about.”
Sandy Bottom has earned $104,022 for her owners James and Donna Daniell. She was bred in Kentucky by Spendthrift Farm.
The winner’s dam Starlit Daydream, who is a half-sister to GIII Beaumont S. heroine Gas Station Sushi (Into Mischief), foaled her only other offspring–a colt–Feb. 24 by Cloud Computing. This is also the family of Grade 1 winner Taste of Paradise
