Mitole filly “Ices” competition with 10-length Miss Indiana S. win

Mitole got his second stakes winner on Oct. 4 when Ice Cold scored an ultra-impressive victory in the $100,000 Miss Indiana S. at Horseshoe Indianapolis, drawing off with complete authority in the stretch to win by 10 lengths.

The 2-year-old filly was making her two-turn maiden track debut in the 1 mile and 70 yard contest. Though she was unplaced in in two starts at the Saratoga meet, she was the odds-on favorite in the Miss Indiana, and lived up to expectations with a stellar performance. She sat in fourth for six furlongs before swinging four-wide coming into the stretch. With a push-button move, she sprinted clear in just a few strides and won under a hand ride.

“This filly is a half-sister to Corningstone, who won this stakes race last year,” winning jockey Brian Hernandez, Jr. said. “(Trainer) Ken (McPeek) wanted to follow the same game plan. Corningstone came into this race last year and broke her maiden and this filly did the same today. We sat pretty comfortable and found something to finish with today.”

McPeek trains the winner for Tilted Shamrock Stables. The bay filly was bred by Deann and Greg Baer. The aforementioned Corningstone has gone on to win three stakes and $316,428.

Mitole is one of only three First-Crop sires with two U.S.-based stakes winners, and has three overall. He is second only to Maximus Mischief by progeny earnings, with $1,091,340 to date. Mitole’s prior stakes winner V V’s Dream is entered in Friday’s $600,000 Alcibiades S. (G1) at Keeneland.
