$3.2 million colt leads a trio seven-figure Into Mischief yearlings at Saratoga sale

Into Mischief, along with his half-sister, were the stars of Tuesday’s closing session of the 2023 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Selected Yearlings sale.

The four-time champion sire had three lots selling for seven figures on Tuesday, with a $3.2 million colt the second-highest price of the night, and a $1.5 million the third-highest. They were topped only by a colt out of Spendthrift’s four-time champion Beholder that sold for $4 million.

Incredibly, Into Mischief’s average yearling price at the two-day sale was $1,034,444 from nine lots sold, while his son Authentic, who also stands at Spendthrift, led all First-Crop sires with an average of $510,909.

The $3.2 million colt, hip No. 228, was consigned by Indian Creek, agent, and sold to Donato Lanni, agent for Amr Zedan. The bay juvenile is the first foal out of the American Pharoah mare All American Dream, who is a half-sister to multiple stakes winner Wind Fire. The colt’s third and fourth dam, Dream Supreme and Spinning Round, were both Grade 1 winners.

“This was a pretty exceptional horse,” said Lanni. “He had the Into Mischief and American Pharoah look. Every time I walked by that barn, he was out for somebody. But he did everything right every time. He just never seemed to have a bad moment. It is really rare to find a horse that is that cool. We couldn’t go home without him.”

The colt was bred in Kentucky by Jeff Drown & Don Rachel.

Eclipse Thoroughbreds went to $1.5 million for hip No. 135, a colt consigned by Taylor Made Sales, agent for Stonestreet Bred & Raised. The Kentucky-bred is out of Rachel’s Valentina, winner of the Spinaway S. (G1) and herself a daughter of the immortal Rachel Alexandra.

“He was an absolute standout all week long,” Eclipse’s Aron Wellman said of the colt. “He is by arguably the greatest sire of our generation in Into Mischief, he is out of a Grade I-winning mare, who is by Bernardini, one of the best broodmare sires of our generation. And she is out of Rachel Alexandra, who is arguably one of the best race mares of our generation. As far as his pedigree, it speaks for itself, but he has to match up physically. And he did that every which way.”

Into Mischief’s final seven-figure horse of the evening was hip No. 208, consigned by St. George Sales Agent and purchased by CHC Inc., Siena Farm and Maverick Racing for $1 million.

The chestnut youngster is out of Grade 2-placed Virginia Key, who is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Grace Adler. This is also the immediate family of Whitney H. (G1) winner and sire Bullsbay.

“Any time you sell a million-dollar horse it’s special,” said Archie St. George. “I am delighted for the breeders. I just played a small part.”

The colt was bred by Bonnie Baskin’s Blue Heaven Farm.
