Corona Bolt tops Bolt d’Oro trifecta at Churchill Downs
November 20, 2022
Three colts by leading First-Crop sire Bolt d’Oro filled out the trifecta in a $120,000 maiden special weight race Saturday at Churchill Downs, with Corona Bolt topping Communication Memo a length back in second and Carcano rounding out the 1-2-3 finish.
First-time starter Corona Bolt was a close third early before taking command on the turn. Communication Memo hung tough with the eventual winner and was closing ground at the end of the 6 ½-furlong race, which went in 1:16.44 on a fast track.
Brad Cox trains the winner for Stonestreet Stables LLC. Corona Bolt sold for $225,000 at the 2020 Keeneland November sale and was bred in Kentucky by Summerfield Sales Agency, Inc. and Etarip Stables. Corona Bolt’s dam Stormbeforethecalm is a half-sister to a trio of stakes winners.
Bolt d’Oro is leading the First-Crop sire list with just over $2 million in progeny earnings. His 22 winners have accounted for 24 wins, with four stakes winners and a remarkable 12 stakes horses to date. He will stand the 2023 season at Spendthrift for $35,000 live foal.
