Cowan kicks off Breeders’ Cup for Spendthirft runners
November 4, 2020
Cowan drew post five in a full field of 14 for Friday’s $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G2), the first of four horses that are either owned by Spendthrift Farm or are slated to join the farm’s stallion roster after their racing careers.
Cowan, who is owned by Spendthrift along with William & Corinne Heiligbrodt and Madaket Stables LLC, actually broke his maiden first time out on the main track, but was switched to the turf for his third start. The 2-year-old son of Kantharos subsequently placed in both the Kentucky Downs Juvenile Turf Sprint and Keeneland’s Indian Summer S. to earn a spot in Friday’s 5 ½-furlong contest.
The Juvenile Turf Sprint is race 6, with a post time of 2:30 p.m. ET. Cowan will have Rafael Santana, Jr. in the irons for trainer Steve Asmussen.
Spendthrift’s other runner on Friday is Juvenile (G1) morning-line favorite and future farm stallion Jackie’s Warrior, while Saturday’s races feature another future stallion in Vekoma in the Sprint (G1) and Kentucky Derby (G1) winner and son of Into Mischief Authentic in the Classic (G1).
