Bemma’s Boy rallies to take Pan American S. (G2)
March 29, 2020
Leading sire Into Mischief tallied his 12th stakes winner of 2020 on Jan. 28 at Gulfstream Park when Bemma’s Boy, under a perfectly timed ride, won the $200,000 Pan American S. (G2) by neck over heavily favored Zulu Alpha.
Bemma’s Boy topped a stellar day at Gulfstream for Into Mischief, who also accounted Gulfstream Park Oaks (G2) runner-up Lucrezia and Appleton S. (G3) second-place finisher Sombeyay. With 12 black type winners and 14 black type wins to date this year, Into Mischief has twice as many as any other sire in both categories.
Second in the John Connally S. (G3) in his most recent outing, Bemma’s Boy broke from post 2 in the Pan American and was quickly guided to the fence by Florent Geroux, taking up a good spot in third just a couple lengths off the lead. He stayed in that spot until the final quarter mile, when he swung his mount four-wide, and then outran Zulu Alpha to the wire, getting the 1 ½-miles in 2:24.91 on the firm turf.
“I got a great trip,” Geroux said. “I drew a nice post and was able to sit third and save all the ground. My horse ran a great race and finished nicely down the lane.”
Trained by Mike Maker for Paradise Farms Corp., Bemma’s Boy collected his first graded win and is 5-1-2 in 18 outings and has earned $291,983. He was bred in Kentucky by Lochlow Farm.
