Malibu Moon’s newest stakes winner came on Aug. 31 at Kentucky Downs when Hanalei Moon closed strongly in the final quarter-mile to win the 1 mile and 70-yard contest by 2 ¼-lengths (VIDEO).
The 4-year-old filly is the eighth stakes winner this year for her sire, while her win pushed his progeny earnings over $6 million for the year. Stakes-placed on a trio of occasions before Saturday, Hanalei Moon improved her record to 4-2-1 in 13 outings and has earned $284,740 for owner/breeder Stonestreet Stables.
Parked in the middle of the field for the first half-mile, Hanalei Moon came four-wide into the stretch to challenge for the lead. On even terms for a furlong, she burst to the lead then moved to the rail and came under the wire in hand to finish the distance in 1:43.16.
