Backsideofthemoon triumphs in thrilling Jazil S.
January 20, 2018
Backsideofthemoon nosed out Doyouknowsomething to give the son of Malibu Moon his first career stakes win in Saturday’s $100,000 Jazil S. at Aqueduct.
The 6-year-old had made only one previous stakes start, finishing second in the Seattle Slew S. last September at Belmont Park.
The 1 1/8-mile Jazil went postward with just four runners. Backsideofthemoon, placed along the rail was last of the quartet for the first seven furlongs. At the head of the stretch, Doyouknowsomething, who had the lead, put away Turco Bravo, but Backsideofthemoon swung to the outside and took on the pacesetter. The duo were side by side the rest of the way, with Backsideofthemoon getting the nod on the wire.
The winner is owned by Lake Lonely Racing and has now banked $314,480. He was bred by Doug Branham and is out of the stakes-winner Ballado’s Thunder.
Consistently a top-10 sire each year in North America, Malibu Moon had his best year ever in terms of progeny earnings in 2017, with $11.2 million. This year, Farrell has won the $125,000 Pippin S. at Oaklawn and High Security has stakes placed prior to Backsideofthemoon’s black type win.
