Into Mischief colt stays perfect in $200K Funny Cide S.
August 25, 2017
Aveenu Malcainu pulled away in the final furlong of the 6 ½-furlong Funny Cide S. Friday at Saratoga to give the 2-year-old Into Mischief colt his second victory in as many starts.
A sharp winner over the same surface in his July 28 debut, Aveenu Malcainu turned in an even more impressive performance in Friday’s affair. Stalking in third until the top of the stretch, the bay colt ranged up to challenge for the lead. He battled with What a Catch until a furlong to run, when he pulled away to win by 2 ½-lengths over a late-closing Inalienable Rights.
The final time was a very good 1:17.69.
“The last hour and half has been exciting with him,” winning trainer Jeremiah Englehart said of the colt’s race while hinting at future plans. “He’s a big boy. We’ll try and stretch him out a little more next time. Hopefully, he keeps progressing. I thought the extra eighth would help him this time. It’s a process to get him going there. [The owners] said they want to run him in the Champagne [G1, Oct. 7 at Belmont Park].”
Aveenu Malcainu is owned by Gold Square LLC and has banked $163,800 in his two victories.
Into Mischief is a top-10 General Sire of 2017 in several categories, including by individual winners, with 120, and stakes winners, with 11.
