Flat Out sires first winner from first starter at Keeneland

Spendthrift Farm freshman sire Flat Out, Flatter’s three-time Grade 1 winner of $3,645,383 on the racetrack, sired his first winner from his first starter on Thursday, when 2-year-old filly Flat Drunk impressively won at first asking in a $60,000 Maiden Special Weight race at Keeneland.

Trained by John Hancock, the bay filly broke from the rail and rated professionally along the inside behind the early leaders. As the field approached the top of the stretch, jockey Corey Lanerie swung Flat Drunk wide for her rally, and the promising filly responded with a strong kick to wear down her rivals and prove best at the wire. The final time for the 4 ½-furlong race was 52.75 seconds over a fast local main track.

Flat Drunk gave her sire Flat Out the first win by a freshman sire in North America in 2017, and she earned $36,000 for owners Donna Hancock and Wayne, Bryan & Gray Lyster. The filly was bred in Kentucky by co-owners Wayne, Bryan & Gray Lyster, and is out of the young Lion Heart mare Feline Flatline, a half-sister to Del Mar Oaks (G1) winner Sharla Rae.

On the track, Flat Out became one of the all-time leading earners from the A.P. Indy sire line, ranking only behind California Chrome and Tonalist among colts from that prestigious line. A six-time graded stakes winner, Flat Out captured back to back Jockey Club Gold Cups (G1), and ended his racing career with a victory in the Cigar Mile (G1).

Flat Out currently stands at Spendthrift for a fee of $7,000 stands and nurses, and is participating in the farm’s popular “Breed Secure” program in 2017 for a fee of $8,500.
